TU Berlin: Brian Gibson new professor at the Department of Brewing and Beverage Technology

Prof. Dr. Brian Gibson has been appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Brewing and Beverage Technology at TU Berlin at the start of the 2020/2021 winter semester. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Frank-Jürgen Methner, who headed the department from 2005 to 2019.

Prior to joining TU Berlin, Brian Gibson worked at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, where he was responsible for research and industry projects and generally directed the brewing science research strategy. In addition, he also served as a lecturer at the University of Helsinki. His research focuses on yeast biology and its influence on fermentation and beer quality. In addition to his work on beer, Brian Gibson has also conducted research on other fermentation processes, including those for wine, cider, kombucha, and sourdough bread.

Brian Gibson published 60 peer-reviewed scientific articles related to beer and has supervised numerous doctoral, master's, and bachelor's theses. Gibson completed his doctorate in 2004 at UCD in Dublin, Ireland. He subsequently conducted brewing research at Oxford Brookes University, UK, and the University of Nottingham, UK, before moving to VTT in Finland.

In his new position at TU Berlin, Brian Gibson aims to modernize teaching and update course content in the Chair’s Brewing and Beverage Technology Programs. In addition, he will establish a well-equipped laboratory for yeast and fermentation research and promote the university as an attractive research partner for the brewing and beverage industries.
